The Gaming Giant Brings Onboard Popular Battle Royale Lead to Boost Struggling Hero Shooter Project Ethos

The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the development team at their internal studio, which is currently developing the forthcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.

Management Shift Follows Mixed Feedback

Brinkman steps into the leadership position at the development studio following the departure of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' disappointing early showing last fall.

Recently, 2K president a key figure notified team members about this strategic move through an official communication, which stressed that early feedback sessions had shown the need for a more defined direction.

Ismailer stated that the team is now overhauling the project with a renewed approach, aiming to satisfy gamer demands.

A Pattern of Key Hires

This announcement echoes a similar action taken by 2K Games in August, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to assist with the BioShock development group.

Below is the complete text from Ismailer's communication:

Team—

I understand you all just wrapped up your gathering - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the positive developments. Last time I sent you all a note, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and talented designers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re excited for that relationship to persist.”

Given your hard work and flexibility, especially over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.

The community feedback from last autumn’s Project ETHOS testing phase was enlightening. It confirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had work to do. It highlighted the requirement for a sharper brand.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve come. You took the feedback to mind and overhauled Project ETHOS with a refreshed vision - one that’s ready to deliver on its potential to our fans.

The trust in this project grows every day. To boost the remarkable advancement you’ve made, It is a pleasure to welcome Ben Brinkman as the new Studio Head of the team. Following some time of talks, he comes aboard us on next week.

His guidance and background in the competitive gaming genre is extensive, having spent the past decade and a half developing and overseeing some of the most popular titles in the industry, for example the acclaimed shooter, and lately, Apex Legends.

Please join me in welcoming him soon. We are all eager to persist observing the progress of the game in the time to ahead.

Experience of the New Leader

The appointee currently holds the role of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. Brinkman earlier worked at major gaming companies in diverse production roles on the iconic franchise series, and, earlier in his career, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Title Details and Concept

The upcoming game was unveiled in October 2024 together with a public demo. Then, the developers portrayed the game as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an exciting evolution on the style."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch reads. "Face the rivals with unique powers, challenges, and obstacles that shift every session. Do you withdraw carefully with your collected items? Alternatively go big, risk it all, and trust your group can achieve the highest spot? The option is up to you."

The game does not have an official debut schedule or consoles, but fans can expect more updates as creation progresses.
