Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a prominent honors show approaches, there’s always a demand for the addition additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and fill the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category that year
  • Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
