The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
