British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of approach shafts leading to the site... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of a great many British troops stationed over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military carried out what it described as a "major assault" against Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
